Allergic rhinitis is caused by a sensitivity to environmental allergens (pollen, dust etc) which the body’s immune system recognises as harmful and produces an allergic response to them. Symptoms are typically seasonal and can be triggered by exposure to the offending allergen. The inflammatory response causes nasal blockage, swelling of the nose and sinuses, itching and sneezing.
A number of different medicines are available to ease the symptoms of allergic rhinitis including over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants and nasal sprays. These are a good place to start, however, if they are not effective your GP may prescribe stronger medication such as nasal steroids or levocetirizine (sample brand names: Zyrtec and Xyzal). These can be purchased from your local pharmacy or over-the-counter.
Medications that reduce nasal congestion, sneezing and itching are very effective in relieving the symptoms of allergic rhinitis and are available as tablets, liquid medication and nasal sprays. These medications are also known as antihistamines and include loratadine, desloratadine, cetirizine and fexofenadine. They can be bought over-the-counter or with a prescription from your GP and are available in both short-acting and long-acting versions.
Intranasal corticosteroids are the most potent medications to treat nasal congestion, sneezing, itching and runny nose of both non-allergic and allergic rhinitis and can be used as either short- or long-term therapy. Alternatively, daily allergy immunotherapy is available as a tablet that dissolves under the tongue (sublingual immunotherapy or “SLIT”) to reduce nasal allergies. This is a longer-term treatment and can be given in the clinic or at home, but it can take months or even years to become fully effective.
Rhinitis can be caused by other issues that may need surgery to resolve them, such as growths in the nose or a crooked wall separating the nasal passages (a deviated septum). This is not an effective treatment for allergic rhinitis but can help with symptom relief in people with nonallergic rhinitis. Occasionally, surgery is used to correct other problems in the nose such as a deviated septum, a hole in the septum, or a twisted nasal valve. These procedures are not an effective rhinitis treatment but can improve symptom relief in some people. A nasal irrigation using salt water in a squeeze bottle or bulb syringe is an excellent non-invasive way of washing out the nose and can significantly relieve some symptoms. Changing the diet and increasing intake of fruits, vegetables, omega 3 fatty acids and magnesium can also improve symptoms in some people.라경찬의원
